Clearing Up the Detritus

I love the word detritus!  I’m actually not sure it’s the best choice of words here, but I used it anyway.
I have ADD.  Yes,that’s relevant.  Clutter makee me crazy.  I can’t work, think, even read if it’s cluttered. I get overwhelmed.  Even with book clutter.
Until this morning, I had more than 100 books on the [...]

Peppermint Twisted by Sammi Carter 01/24/09

The third Candy Shop Mystery was more personal for our heroine.  Felicity Asbury, among the least-liked women in Paradise, CO, was found dead in front of Abby’s shop.  The morning after Abby threatened her.  Of course, Abby threatened to sue Felicity but *that* didn’t get reported to the police.  To add to the mix, the [...]

Candy Apple Dead by Sammi Carter – 01/23/09

Generally speaking, I prefer to start a series with the first book.  The thing is, when I picked up the second in this series, I thought it WAS the first.   It’s kind of weird to go back, in some ways.
For example, in Chocolate Dipped Death Abby is already sort of dating Jawarski.  Her friends were [...]

The Chocolate Bear Burglary – JoAnna Carl 01/20/09

Southwest Michigan is full of tourist towns that are virtually empty for at least half the year.  So it is for Warner Pier (which I’m pretty sure is based on Saugatuck) so Lee McKinney is taken by surprise when first her former stepson shows up and then he’s accused of murder.  She goes out of [...]

Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich 01/19/09

I love a book that makes me laugh.  Early Stephanie Plum books  invariably made me laugh right out loud and this “between the numbers” book did, too.
Plum Spooky opens with Stephanie finding Carl, a monkey, on her door step.  Well, tied to the doorknob with a leash, really.  In this book, Carl is really the [...]

Wicked Fix by Sarah Graves 01/18/09

Why would you care when the Guy Everyone Loves to Hate is murdered?  Maybe you would if the person who has been arrested for the murder is a) your ex-husband, b) the father of your child and c) the key to a huge investment you’ve made and if he goes to prison, you are financially [...]

Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella (audio) ~ 1/9/09

Let’s say you have a disastrous meeting – and your company loses a major client.  Let’s say that it’s your first solo meeting of your career.  Then, on the way home, you are seated next to a handsome man (and you happen to be heterosexual).  Now imagine that your plane hits turbulence and, being scared [...]

Real Vampires Don’t Diet by Gerry Bartlett 01/16/09

Glory St. Clair cannot keep herself out of trouble.  Her boyfriend, Jerry, dumps her on New Year’s Eve to go fly off to Scotland to try to chase down his newly-found daughter, so Glory is at loose ends.  She gets a phone call from the bodyguard of her vampire mentee, Israel Caine – known as [...]

The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb 01/12/09

I liked This Much I Know is True, so I was excited to read Wally Lamb’s newest book.
Overall, I liked it a lot.  There were really a couple of things going on: the story of how Maureen, who was at work at Columbine High School on the day of the shootings and her recovery; the family [...]

The Fire Gospel by Michel Faber 01/05/09

The reviews I read of this were so good, I went right out and got the book.  It didn’t live up to the hype.
Here’s the premise:  Theo is a Canadian academic who, while in Iraq, accidentally comes across ancient scrolls of a “fifth gospel.”  So he steals them, translates them into English and publishes them.  [...]
