Every Which Way but Dead by Kim Harrison -7/14/08 (audio)

Filed under: 2008, Rachel Morgan, audio — DichotomousNature @ 3:45 pm

I read two of this series and decided not to read any more but then saw this at the library and thought, “Why not?”  I’m glad I did.  It wasn’t that I didn’t like the series, it was that I just didn’t care that much about the characters. Harrison just needed to get her stride, so I will be going back and reading the books between the last I read and this.

The stories are complicated and there are generally more than one plotline going on at once.  I will very likely leave stuff out, but here goes.

Rachel saves Cere, Algoliarept the Demon’s familiar, from dying and someone Cere saves Rachel from having to go to the Everafter with Al (as they call the demon.)  Rachel’s boyfriend, Nick, leaves her since she accidentally made him her familiar and he doesn’t like it.  Rachel’s roommate, Ivy, has family issues but I can’t remember what they are.  It took me a long time to listen to this whole book!  At one point, Rachel is on a ship with Kiston, on a date of sorts (Kiston is Ivy’s friend and fellow living vampire) when they are separated and Rachel meets an unnamed guy who turns out to be a Bad Guy.  Rachel nearly gets blown up, she winds up working for Trent Kalamac (I may well be spelling these names wrong as I do not have the book to reference) and someone sort of winds up liking him.  She doesn’t tell Trent that Cere is an elf and could be of help with his research into how to reverse a curse on elves that was made 2,000 years ago.  Cere is 1,000 years old.   Jenks gets mad at Rachel and leaves, refusing to talk to her for the rest of the book.  David, a were, asks Rachel to be in his pack.  Not marry him, just be his Alpha Bitch and get him off the hook for having a real pack.  Rachel winds up dating Kiston.  At the end, Rachel winds up owing Al one favor still, though she got rid of one of his demon marks, but also owes a favor to another demon, a gender nonspecific demon whose name I can’t remember but of whom Cere is afraid.

When Madeline Was Young by Jane Hamilton (audio) 06/10/08

I’ve tried to read this twice.  This time, I tried listening to it.  I still don’t like it and didn’t want to finish it.  It was just borning and my only thought was “Who cares?”

Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch (audio) 06/06/08

Again with the southern thing.

Sarah is a debutante, though we meet her far earlier in her life than that.  A debutante from Charleston, SC.  Basically, the story is all about how she can’t get a man.  I mean, other things happen, but that’s the basic story.  Poor Sarah, the privileged debutante, can’t meet a good man.  Cry me a river.

I didn’t find the character particularly sympathetic.  Also, it was read by the author and I generally think that’s a bad idea.  She had weird timing.

I guess this book was okay.  That’s it.

March by Geraldine Brooks 05/08/08 (audio)

I loved Little Women when I was a child. I think I read it about 10 times. This book is another side to that story. Why were the Marches so poor? Was Marmee really that saintly? What was their father doing during the story? We know he was gone to war and that’s all. “March” fills in the gaps.

The only thing that I didn’t like was that the story changes from Mr. March to Mrs. March but the narrator doesn’t change and doesn’t indicate the change, nor when he returns to the voice of Mr. MArch. It’s only confusing for a minute but I think a segue would have helped.

Full House by Janet Evanovich (audio) 12/5/07

This book was light, somewhat silly and highly implausible.  Still, it was entertaining.  That’s about the best I can say for it.  Funny in spots, but not as funny as Stephanie Plum.  Overall just okay.

The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers by Lillian Jackson Braun (audio) 11/05/07

I asked my sister to get me a book on CD from the library while she was there but I didn’t give her any instructions as to what. This is what I got. My sister loves these books - so much so that she named her cats Coco and Yum Yum. Me? I’m not such a fan. I listened to it anyway and here’s my thoughts:

1. Coco gets too much press and Yum Yum not enough. You hardly ever hear about Yum Yum
2. Qwilleran didn’t waste any time finding a new girlfriend when Polly decided to stay in France.
3. I have no idea what the point of this book was.
4. I listened to the unabridged version so it wasn’t that I was missing stuff but I have no idea what this book was about at all. I’m going to go over to Amazon.com and find out. Hold please.

Well, interestingly, amazon says that this book won’t be released until 12/18 but I have the audio book in my truck.

Also, the book takes place in Michigan. I wonder if LJB is from Michigan. It’s a fictional town and the characters seem very UP-ish, now that I know it’s in MI. Oh, right. There was a death and Qwilleran had to solve it. *That* was nearly incidental in this book. Clearly, since I only remembered it when I read the amazon bit.

Thanks to Wikipedia, I know that Ms. Braun is from Michigan, or at least lived here once, and they think that the town is based on Bad Axe, MI, which is “in the Thumb.” But she now lives in North Carolina.

I’m pretty sure I won’t get any more of these books. This one was only okay.

Bubbles Betrothed by Sarah Strohmeyer (audio) 11/01/07

I can’t help but like these books.   Bubbles is so funny and so unpretentious.  You gotta like that in a girl.

So, let’s see.  What’s this about:  Someone kills the high school principal and Bubbles gets involved, as usual.  This time it’s because the accused murderer is killed while she and Bubbles are in jail together.  Stiletto proposes a fake engagement, Jane gets kidnapped and Dan/Chip decides he’s in love with Bubbles after all.

Blood Red Horse by K.M. Grant (audio) 10/25/2007

This was a pretty good story overall.  I found myself a few times getting annoyed because it was the 1100s and women weren’t treated well, so the business with Ellie was maddening.  Other than that, it was a good story.  I really liked how Hosana brought together one Muslim boy and one Christian and showed them that they weren’t so different after all.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult 10/16/07 (audio)

Filed under: 2007, Jodi Picoult, audio — DichotomousNature @ 10:36 am

This was a great story.

Oddly, I found myself identifying more with the “villian” in the story than the “good guys.”

Peter Houghton is a high school junior who has had it with being bullied and goes to school one day and shoots ten of his classmates and a teacher.  The story explores how it happened, what led up to the shooting and the reactions of the town.

What’s interesting to me is that no lessons were learned: despite the shooting and the deaths, those same children still bullied other children.  Well, if you can call 17 year olds “children.”  But a guy who was *shot* began bullying the very first day they were all back in school.  It boggles the mind.

Of course bullying does not excuse the shooting but no one seemed to care about what was going on in that school and nothign was done to effect any real change.

Not shocking, that.

The Same Sweet Girls by Cassandra King 09/30/07 (audio)

Filed under: 2007, General Fiction, audio — DichotomousNature @ 2:39 pm

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book.  At first, it was slightly confusing as it goes from one person to another but ultimately, I got the swing of it and really enjoyed it.  There were some things that I wish had been more settled but weren’t.  And I was mad at the ending but only because I wanted it to be different.
