Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella 07/08/08

Filed under: 2008, General Fiction — gourmetreader @ 10:09 am

I picked up Remember Me? because a member of an online group I’m in suggested it.  That and I like Sophie Kinsella.  While her books aren’t deep, they are fun.  I’ve read all of the Shopaholic books (and, really, who hasn’t known a Becky Bloomwood?) but I loved Domestic Goddess.

The premise is simple: Lexi Smart has a car accident and wakes up in a hospital thinking it’s three years earlier. She has a husband she doesn’t know and an entire life she doesn’t recognize.  Nothing in her current life is how she would expect it because it’s very out of character.  On the surface, it seems perfect: she’s slimmer, gotten her teeth and hair “fixed”, she has a millionaire husband, a beautiful loft and a great job.  As she begins to piece together her life, she realizes that things aren’t as perfect as they seem.

The characters are interesting, the story is fun and lightly suspenseful.  It’s not an “on the edge of your seat” story but the reader does want to find out how the hell Lexi became The Cobra.  There is no surprise ending, but that’s okay.  Kinsella’s niche is stories that entertain and make us care for the characters. T his one is perfect in that regard.

Wives Behaving Badly by Elizabeth Buchan (audio) 5/24/08

A while back I read the prequel to this, “Revenge of the MIddle Aged Woman.”  I think I need to re-read that, but I digress.  When, exactly, did I become a middle aged woman?  It happened without my permission.  Anyway.

I remember liking Revenge of the Middle Aged Woman but this one didn’t grab me.  I listened to it all the way through but it never got more realistic.  It’s the story of Minty, the second wife.  I don’t prefer that the protagonists of the books I read to be so completly unsympathetic and Minty was.  Very self absorbed and self centered, even when it came to her children.

Not a bad book, I think, but not the greatest. Wouldn’t you know this is an audio book I bought since I needed something quickly?

March by Geraldine Brooks 05/08/08 (audio)

I loved Little Women when I was a child. I think I read it about 10 times. This book is another side to that story. Why were the Marches so poor? Was Marmee really that saintly? What was their father doing during the story? We know he was gone to war and that’s all. “March” fills in the gaps.

The only thing that I didn’t like was that the story changes from Mr. March to Mrs. March but the narrator doesn’t change and doesn’t indicate the change, nor when he returns to the voice of Mr. MArch. It’s only confusing for a minute but I think a segue would have helped.

High Maintenace by Jennifer Belle 03/22/08

I’d read this before but I forgot until I was partway through it, so I just finished it for the second time.

It was still not that great.  I mean, it was okay, but not great. That’s really all I have to say about it.

The Abstinence Teacher by Tom Perrota 12/25/07

Filed under: 2007, General Fiction — gourmetreader @ 8:38 pm

In some ways, this book was difficult to read. It’s *fiction* but all those sanctimonious, self-righteous “Christians” drive me to distraction. Especially when it comes to abstinence education. I get wildly annoyed at medically inaccurate informtion is given out just to scare people into abstinence.

As for the story: not good character development, I think. I didn’t get that invested in any of the characters and the plot wasn’t well-developed enough to stand alone. This book was just okay.

The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers by Lillian Jackson Braun (audio) 11/05/07

I asked my sister to get me a book on CD from the library while she was there but I didn’t give her any instructions as to what. This is what I got. My sister loves these books - so much so that she named her cats Coco and Yum Yum. Me? I’m not such a fan. I listened to it anyway and here’s my thoughts:

1. Coco gets too much press and Yum Yum not enough. You hardly ever hear about Yum Yum
2. Qwilleran didn’t waste any time finding a new girlfriend when Polly decided to stay in France.
3. I have no idea what the point of this book was.
4. I listened to the unabridged version so it wasn’t that I was missing stuff but I have no idea what this book was about at all. I’m going to go over to Amazon.com and find out. Hold please.

Well, interestingly, amazon says that this book won’t be released until 12/18 but I have the audio book in my truck.

Also, the book takes place in Michigan. I wonder if LJB is from Michigan. It’s a fictional town and the characters seem very UP-ish, now that I know it’s in MI. Oh, right. There was a death and Qwilleran had to solve it. *That* was nearly incidental in this book. Clearly, since I only remembered it when I read the amazon bit.

Thanks to Wikipedia, I know that Ms. Braun is from Michigan, or at least lived here once, and they think that the town is based on Bad Axe, MI, which is “in the Thumb.” But she now lives in North Carolina.

I’m pretty sure I won’t get any more of these books. This one was only okay.

Resurrection by Tucker Malarkey 11/02/07

This was interesting in terms of content but the writing style didn’t grab me.  I am interested in the Coptics and Gnostics so I continued reading but I can’t really tell you what the story was about.

Boy Meets Girl - Meg Cabot 10/12/07

Filed under: 2007, General Fiction — DichotomousNature @ 11:05 am

This book was silly.  It was written entirely in emails, IMs and the odd journal entry or two.  Complete fluff.    Yet … entertaining.  I think it’s fun and vaguely voyeuristic.

The Same Sweet Girls by Cassandra King 09/30/07 (audio)

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book.  At first, it was slightly confusing as it goes from one person to another but ultimately, I got the swing of it and really enjoyed it.  There were some things that I wish had been more settled but weren’t.  And I was mad at the ending but only because I wanted it to be different.

Lumby Lines by Gail Fraser 09/23/07

Filed under: General Fiction — DichotomousNature @ 1:12 pm

Yes I can read two complete books in a day if I don’t do much else.

Though I did do laundry and tidy up the place, I didn’t do a great deal of other things yesterday but read.  I was pooped.

In any event, this woman left me a friend request on myspace, so I decided to read the book.  It’s okay.  It’s not great, but it’s okay.  I may read the next one but I won’t buy it.  If they have it in my library, then I’ll read it but I didn’t get invested enough in the characters to care what happens to them next.  In fact, I had a hard time keeping them straight as I was reading the book.
