Miss Julia Paints the Town by Ann B. Ross 06/15/08

I can’t seem to resist a Miss Julia book.  Can’t resist despite the fact that Miss Julia sort of gets on my nerves and I am not that happy that the only black people in the book are servants who fit the stereotype of the good servant who just lives to serve her employer.

What I like about them is that Miss Julia continually gets herself and other into all manner of trouble, despite “knowing better.”  It’s always interesting to see what sort of problems Miss Julia creates for herself.  I think, perhaps, other than that whole servant thing, I see myself in Miss Julia.  Especially as it relates to her continued suspicions of Sam when they aren’t warranted.

Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris 05/21/08

Harper Connelly sees dead people.

Okay, that’s not, strictly speaking, true.  She doesn’t see them so much as sense them.  Harper was hit by lightning when she was 15 and since then she can sense dead people.  That’s how she makes her living, finding dead people.  Usually murder victims, but sometimes not.

In “Grave Sight,” Harper is in Sarne, AR to find the body of a local dead girl.  It seems straightforward enough but it isn’t.  Harper, along with her brother Tolliver, are drawn into a web of small-town connections and drama.  People are hostile to Harper, nearly as a matter of course, since they don’t “approve” of her abilities.

I thought this book was probably the very first written by Charlaine Harris.  I’m not sure that’s true but it starts out stiffly and doesn’t improve much, in terms of writing style. The story is good and I know CH has potential, so I stuck with it.  I will probably read at least the next in the series and see if it improves.

Southern Living by Ad Hudler

I think I tried to read this book a while ago and didn’t finish it.

Margaret is the daughter of an abortion doctor who dies, leaving Margaret a lot of debt and a house in Selby, GA.  Margaret, who has only worked for her mother, moves to Selby and gets a job at the local newspaper.  Then, there is Donna who “used to be” beautiful until a car accident left her with a scar and Suzanne, who is married to “Old Money” and fakes a pregnancy so that her husband will be nice to her again.

The story was supposed to link the women together but it didn’t do that well.  It was okay, but just okay.
